Baccarat totals: why 9 plus 7 is 6, not 16
Baccarat keeps the final digit of a card-value total. Nine plus seven therefore gives 6 points, not 16. The cards have not changed; the game uses a different scoring system from ordinary addition displayed as a two-digit total.
Read the card values before applying that last-digit rule. A picture card contributes zero, while an Ace contributes one.

Convert cards into baccarat values
Okada Manila’s baccarat guide defines the card values and the rightmost-digit point count. We use those definitions for the arithmetic here. The guide is a named operator’s document, not verification of another table’s rules or availability.
Start by translating each card: Ace is 1; numbered cards 2 through 9 retain their values; 10, Jack, Queen and King contribute 0. Only then add and keep the last digit.
Four short examples
| Invented cards | Value sum | Baccarat points |
|---|---|---|
| 9 and 7 | 9 + 7 = 16 | 6 |
| K and 7 | 0 + 7 = 7 | 7 |
| A and 9 | 1 + 9 = 10 | 0 |
| 9, 8 and 7 | 9 + 8 + 7 = 24 | 4 |
The three-card row demonstrates why “subtract ten once” is an incomplete shortcut: 24 − 10 is still 14. Keeping the final digit, or taking the remainder after division by ten, gives 4 directly. Whether a third card should have been dealt is a separate tableau question.

A higher ordinary sum can be a lower baccarat total
Compare 9 + 7 with 4 + 3. The ordinary sums are 16 and 7, but the baccarat point totals are 6 and 7. The second total is closer to nine. Ranking the raw sums would reverse that comparison.
This is also why the number of cards does not by itself rank the hand. Two cards totaling 7 and three cards totaling 7 have equal point totals. Special side bets may care about card count or rank; they should be evaluated under their own conditions.
Do not borrow blackjack’s Ace or bust rules
An Ace here is not an optional 11, and a value sum above nine is not a bust. Importing either idea from blackjack changes the scoring system. The safest note keeps the exact game name beside the cards.
For a saved result, calculate both hands’ final point totals first. Then apply the specific wager’s settlement rule. A hand total alone does not show what was staked, whether a Tie selection existed or what the returned amount should be. These examples explain points, without inventing a wager or claiming that a selected hand is more likely to win.
